Professional Mulching Services to Protect and Nourish Your Garden
Mulch does a lot of quiet work in a garden. A good layer locks moisture into the soil, keeps weeds from taking over, protects roots from the worst of the summer heat, and slowly feeds the ground as it breaks down. Skip it, and you’re watering more often, pulling weeds constantly, and watching your beds bake dry through January. It’s one of the cheapest, most effective things you can do for a garden, provided it’s laid at the right depth with the right material.
At Northern Lawn Mowers, we supply and spread mulch for homes and businesses across Greenvale, Kalkallo, Craigieburn and the surrounding northern suburbs. We’ll help you pick the right type for your beds, prep the ground, and lay it evenly to the depth that actually does the job. No thin, patchy scatter that blows away in a fortnight.

What type of mulch is best for my garden?
It depends on what you’re growing and the look you’re after. Bark and woodchip mulches are great for general garden beds and last a good while, while sugarcane and pea straw break down faster and feed the soil quicker. We’ll talk you through the options and match it to your beds.
How thick should mulch be laid?
Generally around 50 to 75mm. Any thinner and weeds push straight through and it dries out fast. We lay it to a proper depth so it actually holds moisture and suppresses weeds the way it’s meant to.
Does mulch really cut down on watering?
It makes a noticeable difference. A solid layer of mulch slows evaporation, so the soil stays damp for longer and you’re not out there with the hose every second day through summer.
How often does mulch need replacing?
Most organic mulches break down over a year or two and want topping up. Once it thins out or breaks down into the soil, it’s time for a fresh layer. For most gardens, a top-up every year or so keeps things right.
Do I need to weed the beds first?
Ideally yes, and we’ll handle that as part of the job. Clearing weeds before mulching means they’re far less likely to push back through, so the fresh layer stays clean and low-maintenance.
Can you mulch as part of a bigger garden job?
Mulching often goes hand in hand with weeding, pruning and a general tidy-up, so plenty of customers get it all done in one visit. Just let us know what you need.
