Weeds usually appear where lawn growth is thin, stressed or uneven. Compacted soil, bare patches, excessive moisture and mowing too short can all give unwanted plants room to establish.
Effective weed control starts with correct identification. A product designed for broadleaf weeds will not necessarily control winter grass, and some lawn treatments can damage buffalo, kikuyu or couch. Before spraying anything, check both the weed and your lawn type.
Bindii
Bindii grows close to the ground in a flat rosette. Its small, fern-like leaves are easy to miss during winter, but the plant produces sharp prickles as the weather warms.
The best time for bindii removal is late autumn through winter, before the seed heads harden. Small plants can be pulled by hand when the ground is damp, provided the roots are removed. Larger infestations may require a selective lawn treatment suitable for the grass variety. Once the prickles have formed, killing the plant will not remove the prickles already present.
Clover in the Lawn
Clover has rounded groups of three leaves and produces small white or pinkish flowers. It often spreads through lawns that are thin or growing in low-fertility soil.
Small patches can be removed by hand, but the creeping stems and roots need to come out as well. For widespread clover, use a lawn weed treatment specifically labelled for clover and compatible with your turf. Improving lawn density can also reduce the open areas where clover spreads.
Dandelions
Dandelions are recognised by their deeply toothed leaves, yellow flowers and round seed heads. They grow from a strong taproot, which allows the plant to return if only the leaves are removed.
Use a narrow weeding tool to remove the whole taproot while the soil is moist. It is best to act before the flower turns into a seed head. Individual plants can also be spot treated rather than spraying the entire lawn.
Winter Grass
Winter grass is a bright green, fine-leaf grass that often stands out from the surrounding turf. It usually appears during autumn and winter and produces pale seed heads even when kept short.
Hand removal works for isolated plants if they are pulled before producing seed. A larger infestation is harder to manage because winter grass is itself a grass, not a broadleaf weed. Winter grass treatment requires a product approved for the weed and safe for the existing lawn.
Chickweed
Chickweed forms a soft, spreading mat with small oval leaves and tiny white flowers. It prefers damp, shaded ground and can quickly cover weak sections of lawn.
Pull chickweed when the soil is moist, taking care to remove the roots and trailing stems. Improve drainage where possible and avoid leaving the area constantly wet.
When Professional Weed Spraying Helps
Hand weeding is practical when only a few weeds are present. Professional weed spraying services may be more suitable when weeds cover a large area, keep returning or include a mixture of broadleaf and grassy weeds.
A professional can identify the lawn type, select a suitable treatment and target the affected areas without unnecessary spraying. This is particularly important when children or pets use the lawn or when nearby garden plants could be affected.
Northern Lawn Mowers provides weed control in Melbourne, including weed spraying and general garden maintenance across Kalkallo and Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Always follow the product label and keep people and pets away from treated areas for the stated period.
